G’day Fearmongers,
Australians have known in their loins for a long time that our leaders are wankers — and this week’s news is finally proof. The grotesque double header of bombshell news stories from Parliament House was a perfect encapsulation of how our media operates. Commercial media’s shiny distraction factory vs public broadcaster’s steady public interest truth bombs being dropped so carefully as to cause the least potential for defamation lawsuits.
Firstly; Network Ten’s Peter Van Onselen, had a saucy yarn about a consensual orgy in a prayer room, and a staffer wanking on a woman MP’s desk. Both events happened many years ago, so why was this story in the public interest? Well, we can reveal Peter Van Onselen went to university with the desk, and it was the best man at his wedding. It definitely wasn’t designed to suck the air out of the second big story of the night at all.
The 4 Corners, story on Monday essentially told us that everyone at a high level in Parliament House knew what happened to Brittany Higgins long before February this year. It had none of the panache of PVO’s dead cat on the table, but it had facts relevant to the integrity of our democracy. So it wins.
Fearmongers, I hate to say it — I could be the first to say it, maybe, just maybe politicians are liars.
