As Saul Griffith has recently pointed out, the major problem in growing renewable energy in Australia is distribution, so why isn’t his government taking steps to facilitate solar on apartment roofs? eg I own a typical early 21st century (therefore with gas heating + cooking) apartment. It has roofs ideal for solar – but the cost of upgrading to solar and eliminating gas is prohibitive. It might be a good long-term investment for resident owners, but most of the owners are investors. They don’t spend money unless it is legally necessary. This is true of most apartment developments. All those roofs, all over the big cities, all that sunshine going to waste….
